Upcoming Community Forum - Mission in Action: Mentoring

Learn how Volunteers of America's Mentoring Children of Promise program helps bring a stable, caring adult into the lives of children with an incarcerated parent. Volunteers of America's staff and partner churches in the community match children with trained, compatible and committed adult mentors.
Sherlyn Hughes, Director of Children & Family Services Mentoring Program at Volunteers of America
- Ms. Hughes is celebrating her 20th year working at Volunteers of America. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work from Southern University at New Orleans. She has extensive experience in working with youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as in planning, organizing, and implementing social service programs.
- Ms. Hughes worked in the field as a social worker for almost 10 years prior to managing the mentoring program. Because of her efforts, over 1,500 at-risk youth with have been matched with caring mentors.
Christy Ross, Senior Vice President of Grants, Baptist Community Ministries
- Ms. Ross leads a team of six grantmaking professionals overseeing the Foundation’s grantmaking processes. She has over 15 years in both the clinical healthcare and public health sectors. She also served as an adjunct instructor at Dillard University in the School of Public Health.
- She received a Master’s Degree in Health Administration from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Xavier University of Louisiana.
