The Home Depot Foundation Announces $150,000 Grant to Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans to Provide Quality Veterans Housing in Covington, La.
The Home Depot® Foundation announced a $150,000 grant to Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans to address the critical housing needs of U.S. military veterans. This grant is part of more than $1.75 million in funding announced for nine Volunteers of America veterans housing programs in eight states. This funding will help improve or build 219 units of housing for veterans, including up to 64 earmarked specifically for women veterans, and is part of a larger Volunteers of America initiative which will impact 883 units of housing.

ATLANTA, Sept. 1, 2016 --Today, The Home Depot Foundation announces it will grow its commitment to veteran-related causes to a quarter of a billion dollars by 2020.The Home Depot Foundation has focused on U.S. military veteran support since 2011. Today's increased commitment will help address continued veteran challenges, including: More than 39,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. More than one million veterans are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks and subpar living conditions.More than 3.8 million veterans have a service-connected disability.There has been a 60% increase in veterans with service-connected disabilities since 1990.More than 9.4 million veterans are age 65 and older. Many of these veterans need home modifications so they can age-in-place safely.

Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans Receives $25,000 Grant from the Walmart Foundation to Benefit Healthy Lifestyle Choices for Children
Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans is honored to announce that the Walmart Foundation has granted $25,000 to the organization’s Healthy Lifestyle Choices for Children project, an initiative of Volunteers of America’s Fresh Food Factor Program. Funds will be used to support nutrition and healthy lifestyle education among approximately 800 disadvantaged, low-income children and their families in Orleans Parish.

In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 10-16), Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ senior RSVP Volunteers gathered for an annual recognition luncheon celebrating more than 43,000 hours of community service in 2015. The RSVP luncheon was held at the Fleur de Lis Event Center in Mandeville on Saturday, April 16.

Supporters and affiliates of Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans gathered on April 13, 2016, for a dedication ceremony commemorating the opening of the Oscar J. Tolmas Veterans Center. Located in Uptown New Orleans at 3801 Pitt Street, the facility provides transitional housing and rehabilitation services for 20 homeless Veterans in the Greater New Orleans area.

On March 15, Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans hosted its 24th Annual GolfStar Classic, presented by Jay Trusheim, Prudential Financial Professional, offering P&C through Liberty Mutual Insurance, at TPC Louisiana. The tournament is the sole fundraiser for the organization’s Adoption Program.

The historic Houma Elementary School site will receive new life next year as Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans opens the Houma School Apartments, providing 103 new apartments for seniors ages 62 and above through the conversion of the school building for housing and construction of a new residential building on the grounds.
